New Zealand, which is becoming known as a region that produces affordable and great tasting wine, will be host this month to the 2009 New World Wine Awards, which will be held in Wellington 28-29 July. Wines entered in the competition must retail for at or below $25 per bottle, and there must be at least 500 cases of each entered wine to be available for sale.
A total of 1,077 wines have been entered into the competition this year, up from 837 last year. This large increase is an indication that winemakers are recognizing the value of these awards and the desire among the wine drinking public to have affordable and great tasting wines, two factors that many believe cannot both be had at the same time. With New Zealand’s recognition for producing affordable, yet high quality wines, it will certainly give the competition a run for its money.
“This is a fantastic competition to be involved in, because it really shows off an amazing selection of New Zealand and international wines that are available to consumers at very competitive prices,” says Jim Harré, chair of the 2009 New World Wine Awards judging panel.
“With more people dining in and entertaining at home than ever before it’s great that we are able to take the guess work out of choosing a top wine for a good price.”
A judging panel comprised of 12 renowned winemakers, commentators and judges will undertake a two-day blind tasting of the entered wines. The judges will confer Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals for the top wines and will select the best red, white, and sparkling wines overall.
The award winners will be announced to the public on Monday 21 September 2009.
