Results of Airline Competition Released: NZ White Flies High

Global Traveler, which is the only ABC-audited magazine for business and luxury travelers, has released the results from its fifth annual Wines on the Wing International Business Class Airline Competition. The competition was held on May 27 in New York City. Thirty-five expert judges participated in the blind taste testing of white, red and sparkling wines that are served in business class aboard airline flights. Airlines are required to submit five different wines to be considered — two red wines, two white wines, and one sparkling wine.

Taking the top honor for the Best Overall Wines on the Wing Award was Qatar Airways. Qatar also took top honors in the Best White Wine category for its Saint Clair Pioneer Block 18 Sauvignon Blanc 2008 from New Zealand. New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is considered to be the nation’s signature wine and is widely considered to be one of the best growing regions for this type of grape. The cool, maritime climate of the area allows for a long and steady growing season in which the grapes can ripen and develop a natural balance of acids and sugars.

Tony Hughes, vice-president Americas, Qatar Airways, said in response to the announcement, “Our wine consultants are some of the world’s best known, and their excellent selections are evidenced by the recognition we’ve received and continue to receive in celebration of our in-flight wine cellar.
