Resene, a New Zealand paint company won $1 million in the competition “What’s your problem, New Zealand?” sponsored by Crown institute Industrial Research Limited (IRL).
According to Resene Managing Director, Nick Nightingale, most paints currently available in the market use a large amount of non-renewable resources in their resins. This money will be used to help them develop a paint containing 80% of renewable materials as compared to what the current market has, which only contains 40% at the most.
The details of the solution remain, of course, a secret, but Nick Nightingale divulged it will be water-based and will use ingredients from mostly industrial waste streams.
